Centre for Arms Control Vows to Combat Illicit Arms in Nigeria

The National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) has reaffirmed its commitment to curbing the proliferation of illicit arms in Nigeria, as stakeholders gathered in Kaduna for a one-day sensitization workshop on the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons Act, 2024.

The workshop, held at the Air Training Command Officers’ Mess (NAF Club) Conference Hall, brought together policymakers, security agencies, civil society organizations, and community leaders to discuss the effective implementation of the newly enacted law.

In his closing remarks, the Director General of the Centre, Deputy Inspector General of Police Johnson Babatunde Kokumo (Rtd), commended participants for their dedication and valuable contributions.

Represented by the Director Legal Services, Barrister Chioma Onuegbu. Kokumo emphasized the urgency of addressing the spread of small arms and light weapons, stressing that collaboration among all stakeholders is critical to ensuring national peace and security.

“Today’s discussions have reinforced the critical role each of us must play in ensuring that this Act translates into real impact on the ground. I urge everyone here—whether as policymakers, security operatives, or community leaders—to take meaningful steps in supporting its implementation,” DIG Kokumo stated.

The Director General also lauded the North-West Zone of the Centre for successfully organizing the workshop and assured them of the National Headquarters’ continued support in implementing arms control initiatives.

He expressed gratitude to the resource persons, organizers, and participants for their commitment to the cause, urging them to sustain efforts toward building a safer and more secure Nigeria.

The workshop ended on a high note, with participants reaffirming their dedication to curbing the illegal arms trade and ensuring the effective enforcement of the 2024 Act.

The Governor of Kaduna State was represented at the event by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs Dr James Atung Kanyip.
