Kanwan Katsina Advocates Expanded Radio Coverage as NUJ Celebrates 2025 World Radio Day

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Katsina State Council, joined the global community in commemorating the 2025 World Radio Day, themed “Radio and Climate Change: Amplifying Voices for a Sustainable Future.”

The event, held at the NUJ Secretariat in Katsina, brought together prominent media professionals, government officials, and key stakeholders in the journalism industry.

Speaking as the Father of the Day, the Kanwan Katsina, District Head of Ketare, Alhaji Usman Bello Kankara, mni, emphasized the enduring relevance of radio as the most accessible and affordable medium of communication, especially in remote areas where television, newspapers, and the internet remain limited.

He underscored the pivotal role of radio in educating, informing, and entertaining the public while fostering national unity and public enlightenment. He reiterated his long-standing advocacy for the establishment of new FM stations in Katsina, Daura, and Funtua, highlighting their potential to enhance grassroots communication, generate revenue, and create employment opportunities.

Urging the Katsina State House of Assembly to expedite the process, the royal father stressed the necessity of expanding radio infrastructure to bridge the communication gap in underserved communities.

Call for Better Welfare for Journalists

The Kanwan Katsina also called on radio station management to prioritize the welfare of journalists, advocating for the timely payment of salaries and allowances, regular promotions, and access to professional training programs.

“Investing in the well-being and capacity-building of journalists is essential for maintaining high standards in broadcasting and aligning with global best practices,” he stated.

Upholding Ethical Journalism

Addressing journalists, particularly those in radio broadcasting, he urged them to uphold professionalism, ethics, and truthfulness in their work. He emphasized that responsible journalism should promote peace, development, and accountability in society.

While congratulating award recipients at the event, he encouraged others to remain committed to excellence, stating that journalism is a profession built on consistency and impact.

Commendation for NUJ and Commitment to Media Growth

Commending the NUJ Katsina State Council for its dedication to celebrating World Radio Day annually, he acknowledged its role in honoring journalists and reinforcing the importance of radio in society.

He reaffirmed his commitment to the growth of journalism in Katsina State and Nigeria, pledging that his palace remains open for collaboration with the media.

The Significance of World Radio Day

World Radio Day, celebrated annually on February 13 as designated by the United Nations, recognizes radio’s profound impact in shaping societies, promoting dialogue, and fostering inclusive communication across the globe.

The event in Katsina reaffirmed radio’s indispensable role in reaching diverse audiences, particularly in addressing issues like climate change, public enlightenment, and grassroots development.
