ECOWAS Defence Chiefs to Review Pledges for Standby Force, Counterterrorist Brigade
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff has commenced a review of pledges for the ECOWAS Standby Force and the Counterterrorist Brigade.
This was announced by General Christopher Gwabin Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff of Nigeria, during the opening ceremony of the 43rd Ordinary Meeting of the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff in Abuja, Today.
According to General Musa, “the complexity of the security landscape demands that we leverage our collective expertise, intelligence assets and coordinate our efforts across borders if we must solve these challenges.”

He noted that the need for a collective approach to addressing regional security challenges, stating that “collaboration is paramount and imperative to address both the root causes and symptoms of insecurity in our region.”
The review of pledges for the ECOWAS Standby Force and the Counterterrorist Brigade is expected to strengthen the regional security architecture and enhance the capacity of ECOWAS member states to respond to emerging security threats.
The meeting, which is being attended by defence chiefs from across the ECOWAS region, will also focus on other critical areas, including maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea and the rotation of staff officers of peace support operations divisions.
General Musa expressed optimism that the meeting would achieve its objectives, stating that “together, we will build a safer and more prosperous future for our people.
