Reps Move to Ban Porn Websites, Order NCC to Enforce Nationwide Blockage

In a decisive move to curb access to pornographic content, the House of Representatives has ordered the total shutdown of porn websites across Nigeria, directing the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to enforce an immediate ban.

The resolution, adopted during plenary on Tuesday, mandates internet service providers (ISPs) to block access to such sites as part of efforts to uphold societal values and curb moral decay.

Leading the motion, Hon. Dalhatu Tafoki, representing Faskari/Kankara/Sabuwa Federal Constituency, argued that pornography poses significant psychological and sociological risks while contradicting Nigeria’s religious and cultural principles.

“Nigeria is a highly religious country, and all major religions condemn nudity and obscenity,” Tafoki stated. “Many nations across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East have implemented strict regulations against pornography, and Nigeria must take similar steps.”

He further highlighted concerns raised by experts regarding the negative effects of pornography, including increased rates of adultery, prostitution, addiction, and changes in social attitudes towards relationships and family life.

Following deliberations, the House tasked its Committees on Communications and Legislative Compliance with ensuring strict enforcement of the directive. Speaker Tajudeen Abbas also issued a stern warning that sanctions would be imposed on ISPs that fail to comply, reinforcing the lawmakers’ commitment to tackling the issue.

The committees are expected to report back within four weeks on the implementation status, setting the stage for further legislative action on the matter.
