The Guardian Apologises, Says No Malice Against DSS
The management of Guardian Newspapers Limited has issued an apology to the Department of State Services (DSS) over a report that portrayed the secret police as interfering in the affairs of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
The article, titled “Lagos Assembly Crisis Worsens, Reveals Deeper Crack in State Power Dynamics,” alleged that several DSS operatives had invaded the Assembly complex. However, in response to a letter from the DSS’s legal counsel, Adedipe and Adedipe, demanding a retraction and apology, the newspaper clarified that it had published the report without realizing that the DSS officers had been invited by the Assembly’s management to secure the legislative facility.

In a statement signed by its legal adviser, Eki Durojaiye, Esq., The Guardian acknowledged the error and emphasized that the report was not intended to misrepresent the DSS’s actions or mislead the public.
“Upon realizing that the publication inadvertently misrepresented the purpose behind the presence of security operatives at the State Assembly on February 17, 2025, The Guardian published a follow-up on Monday, February 24, 2025, titled ‘Lagos State Assembly Crisis: No Malice Against DSS,’ in which it issued a full retraction and apology,” the newspaper stated.
Durojaiye further described the incident as an “innocuous slip, devoid of any malice against the DSS.” He reiterated that the publication was not meant to mislead or create misinformation.
“Accordingly, we convey our sincere and unreserved apologies to the DSS and regret any inconvenience the publication may have caused,” the letter concluded.
