Nigerian Army Commander Advocates Positive Use of Social Media Among Students

Major General Kevin Aligbe, Commander of the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) of the Nigerian Army, has called on students to harness the power of social media for their personal and career development. The advice was delivered during an intra-school debate competition held at the Government Army Day Secondary School in Minna on Thursday, March 13, 2025.

Represented by Lieutenant Colonel Ganiyyu Banire, Commanding Officer of the TRADOC Administration Battalion, Maj Gen Aligbe emphasized the educational and skill-building opportunities offered by social media platforms. He urged students to use these tools responsibly to enhance their learning and career prospects. However, he also warned against the dangers of early exposure to harmful content, advising students to avoid such negative influences.

A statement by Lt Col Sani Uba, the spokesperson of TRADOC said the debate competition, organized by National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the Minna Military Cantonment, aimed to foster critical thinking, public speaking, and presentation skills among students. The event marked the first of its kind in the school and was well-received by both students and staff.

In his welcome address, Corps Liaison Officer (CLO) Olakojo Bamidele, a serving NYSC member, thanked the school principal, Mrs. Fatima Umar, for allowing the corps members to organize the event as part of extracurricular activities aimed at enriching the students’ learning experience.

Mrs. Umar, on behalf of the school management and students, expressed gratitude to Maj Gen Aligbe for his consistent support, which included the donation of educational materials, regular engagement with the school, and participation in various school activities. She also commended the NYSC members for initiating the debate competition, describing it as a valuable addition to the school’s academic and social calendar.

The event was attended by high-ranking military officials, including Brigadier General Mohammed Jibo, Commander of the 31 Artillery Brigade, represented by Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Lagos, and Lieutenant Colonel Alex Jir, Commanding Officer of the 313 Artillery Regiment. Other attendees included officers, soldiers from the Minna Military Cantonment, and NYSC members.

Outstanding students who excelled in the debate were awarded medals, trophies, prizes, and cash rewards in recognition of their performance.

The debate competition not only provided a platform for students to showcase their talents but also reinforced the importance of responsible social media use, aligning with the Nigerian Army’s commitment to youth development and education.
