STATE OF EMERGENCY: PDP dares Tinubu, describes action as ‘constitutional breach’
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly rejected President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, describing it as an unconstitutional move to undermine democracy.
In a statement issued late Tuesday, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, accused the president of exercising powers he does not legally possess by suspending a democratically elected governor and appointing an unelected administrator.
“The PDP and indeed, Nigerians listened with dismay to the national broadcast by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in which he violated the 1999 Constitution by imposing a state of emergency in Rivers State,” Ologunagba said.

He insisted that the president’s action was a deliberate attempt to override the constitution and impose what he described as “undemocratic rule” in a PDP-controlled state.
“The unconstitutional suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the appointment of Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd) as an interim administrator is an attack on democracy, a disregard for the will of Rivers people, and a dangerous precedent,” he added.
Ologunagba further alleged that the move was part of a broader plan to weaken opposition parties and establish a one-party state. He accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of deliberately engineering the crisis in Rivers to justify an unconstitutional takeover.
