Customs Foil N72.6m Peteol Smuggling Attempt to Cameroon via River Benue

The Adamawa/Taraba Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted 240 drums of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) worth N72.6 million, preventing an attempt to smuggle the product into Cameroon through the River Benue waterways.

Speaking to journalists at the command headquarters in Yola on Wednesday, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Garba Bashir, emphasized the agency’s renewed commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s borders and tackling cross-border smuggling.

“The operatives of the command have launched yet another heavy blow on smugglers through shared intelligence, leverage of technology, and coordinated border management,” Bashir stated.

He disclosed that the seizure was made in the early hours of the day at Jimeta Waterside, also known as Bakin Kogi, where officers discovered the fuel stockpiled and ready for illegal transportation.

Reaffirming the agency’s resolve, Bashir declared that smuggling operations within Adamawa and Taraba states would be met with relentless enforcement.

“We have started strangling the smugglers, and we will continue to strangle and suffocate them until smuggling activities are completely wiped out of this command,” he vowed.

He also issued a stern warning to individuals involved in illicit trade, urging them to embrace legitimate business.

“To smugglers and economic saboteurs, I encourage you to forsake illicit trade activities and embrace genuine business. The Nigeria Customs Service is committed to facilitating legal trade and remains ever ready to crack down on smuggling cartels to strengthen our national economy.”
