In Six Months, FG Rehabilitates 3,030 Prison Inmates

The Federal Government has rehabilitated no fewer than 3,030 inmates across its custodial facilities, equipping them with various vocational skills and trades.

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this on Thursday during a ministerial press briefing organized by the Ministry of Information and National Orientation in Abuja.

He stated that the government has also strengthened security measures in several custodial facilities to prevent external attacks.

“Between July and December 2024, 3,030 inmates were rehabilitated in various vocational skills, including carpentry, tailoring, poultry farming, fishery, hairdressing, and more,” Tunji-Ojo said.

He further revealed that Violent Extremist Offenders (VEOs) underwent rehabilitation under the De-radicalization Programme of the Nigerian Correctional Service during the last quarter of 2024.

Additionally, over 50 inmates across various custodial centers are currently enrolled in academic programs at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) Special Study Centres.

The minister also noted that in 2024, the Nigerian Correctional Service empowered more than 32 discharged inmates with Aftercare Materials to aid their reintegration into society.

“The Service has successfully implemented measures to safeguard our custodial facilities against external aggressions,” he added.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo further disclosed that arrangements have been concluded with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) for the biometric data capturing of inmates.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, commended Dr. Tunji-Ojo for introducing remarkable innovations aimed at repositioning the Interior Ministry in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“Under his leadership, the ministry has undergone transformative changes that have significantly improved the efficiency and accessibility of its services to Nigerians,” Idris said.
