Senate Okays Appointment of Nwakuche as Substantive NCoS Boss, Tasks Him on Prison Security
The Senate has confirmed Sylvester Nwakuche as the new Controller General of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), following his nomination by President Bola Tinubu on December 13, 2024.
Nwakuche’s appointment received approval during Tuesday’s plenary session after the Senate Committee on Interior, chaired by Senator Adams Oshiomhole, presented its report. Lawmakers deliberated on the committee’s findings and unanimously endorsed his confirmation.

Announcing the decision, Senate President Godswill Akpabio urged Nwakuche to take decisive actions to enhance security in correctional facilities nationwide. He emphasized the need to curb jailbreaks and improve prison management.
Nwakuche’s confirmation comes in the wake of a recent jailbreak at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton Karfe, Kogi State, where 12 inmates escaped and a correctional officer lost his life. His leadership is expected to address such security lapses and reinforce the country’s correctional system.
