FG arraigns 9 suspects over pipelines vandalism, economic sabotage

In a renewed effort to combat crude oil theft, the Federal Government has arraigned nine individuals accused of vandalizing pipelines in Ogidiama community, Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The suspects—Anthony Peter, Nelson Joshua, Stanley Kio, Adekunle Godspower, William Don-Pedro, Aminu Suleiman, and three others—were brought before the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt on Monday. They face two charges: conspiracy and unlawful tampering with oil pipelines.

Authorities arrested the accused on March 11, 2025, following intensified surveillance in the region. They pleaded not guilty and were remanded at the Port Harcourt Correctional Centre until their trial resumes on May 6 and 7.

Tougher Sentences for Oil Vandals

With crude oil theft causing significant economic losses, the Federal Government has escalated enforcement measures. A newly established interagency security task force—including personnel from the Police, EFCC, Civil Defence, Ministry of Justice, Army, and Navy—has been deployed to tackle the crisis head-on.

Under stricter laws, convicted oil vandals could face life imprisonment, with no room for plea bargaining. The move signals the government’s determination to dismantle oil theft networks and restore accountability in the sector.

Prosecution Vows to End Pipeline Sabotage

Speaking after the court session, prosecution counsel Frederick O. Dibang reaffirmed the government’s commitment to cracking down on illegal oil activities.

“We just arraigned nine defendants before the Federal High Court in Rivers State on charges of conspiracy and pipeline tampering. Their oral bail application was denied, and they have been remanded pending a formal hearing,” Dibang stated.

Issuing a stern warning to oil thieves, he added, “The era of impunity is over. A dedicated force is in place to ensure that those sabotaging the nation’s economy are brought to justice.”

Dibang also called on security agencies to preserve all evidence in oil-related cases, stressing that tampering with exhibits undermines prosecutions.

As the case proceeds in May, authorities are ramping up efforts to dismantle oil theft syndicates and secure the nation’s energy infrastructure.
