Retired Security Experts Urge Tinubu to Boost Intelligence, Manpower in Fight Against Insecurity

A group of retired security operatives has urged President Bola Tinubu to address the severe shortage of security and intelligence personnel, which they say is hampering efforts to tackle Nigeria’s complex security challenges.

In a communiqué released after their maiden annual lecture, the Alumni Association of the National Institute for Security Studies (AANISS) emphasized that the lack of security coverage, especially in ungoverned spaces, is fueling insecurity across the country.

The event, themed “Mobilising Stakeholders to Curb Insecurity in Nigeria: A Practical Approach”, called for a shift from theoretical security strategies to a more inclusive, hands-on approach.

AANISS President, Mike Ejiofor, a retired director of the Department of State Services (DSS), stressed the need for better coordination among security agencies and stronger citizen engagement to combat terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other crimes.

“The absence of adequate security personnel and citizen participation remains a key factor in Nigeria’s security crisis,” Ejiofor stated.

The group also highlighted the role of local government councils in addressing grassroots security issues and called for greater involvement of Nigerians in the diaspora in securing essential security equipment. Additionally, they advocated for enhanced intelligence-sharing with neighboring Francophone countries, better community-led security initiatives, and the integration of security education into Nigeria’s academic curriculum.

AANISS urged the government to prioritize job creation for young Nigerians to reduce their vulnerability to criminal activities and called for a whole-of-society approach to national security.
