Nigeria Engages US Govt on Legal Immigration, Other Strategic Ties

Nigeria and the United States have opened fresh diplomatic channels aimed at strengthening bilateral ties, with energy, legal migration, security, and trade topping the agenda during a high-level virtual meeting held between both countries.

The meeting, which marks the first formal diplomatic engagement between the Nigerian government and the new U.S. administration of President Donald Trump, featured Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, Christopher Landau.

In a statement released after the engagement, Ambassador Tuggar expressed Nigeria’s willingness to collaborate with the new American leadership to advance mutual interests across key sectors, particularly in the areas of energy transition, technology innovation, and human capital development.

On migration, the Minister highlighted Nigeria’s commitment to promoting structured and beneficial emigration, citing the Technical Aide Corps (TAC) as a model that deploys skilled Nigerian professionals abroad to support development efforts in partner countries.

Tuggar said Nigeria remains open to working with the U.S. to enhance legal pathways for migration, ensure respect for human dignity, and boost economic opportunities for citizens on both sides.

In his remarks, Deputy Secretary Landau reiterated the United States’ readiness to deepen commercial and security partnerships with Nigeria.

He emphasized the importance of continuous dialogue, collaboration on global peace and security, and support for democratic governance across the region.

Both officials pledged to sustain the momentum of engagement, promising to work closely on addressing shared challenges while unlocking new opportunities for growth and cooperation.
