JUST IN: IGP Withdraws Invitation to Emir Sanusi, Dispatches Intelligence Operatives  to Kano

The Nigeria Police Force has officially withdrawn its earlier invitation extended to Alhaji Lamido Sanusi regarding the violent incident that occurred during the Sallah celebration in Kano State on March 30, 2025.

The information was disclosed in a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in Abuja this evening.

The invitation had sought to obtain Alhaji Sanusi’s account of the events surrounding the breakdown of law and order on that day. However, following consultations with respected stakeholders and to avoid any perception of politicization, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has now directed operatives of the Force Intelligence Department (FID) to proceed to Kano to obtain Sanusi’s statement in person.

Prior to the Sallah celebration, credible intelligence at the disposal of the Police revealed plans by the two disputed Emirs of Kano—Alhaji Ado Bayero and Alhaji Lamido Sanusi—to hold separate Durbar festivals. In a bid to prevent clashes, the IGP deployed the Coordinating Deputy Inspector-General of Police for the North West, DIG Abubakar Sadiq, to engage with both camps and the Kano State Government. An agreement was reached that neither Emir would hold a Durbar or ride a horse during the festivities.

However, despite attending the Eid prayers in his car, Alhaji Sanusi reportedly mounted a horse and led a procession after the prayers, accompanied by local vigilantes. This move allegedly triggered a confrontation with youths in the area, resulting in the tragic death of one Usman Sagiru and injuries to several others.

The Force, which had earlier warned against such developments, said its proactive engagement was meant to avert the exact situation that unfolded. Some arrests have already been made in connection to the incident, the Police confirmed.

Reiterating the commitment of the Force to neutrality and professionalism, the IGP emphasized that all individuals found culpable would face the full weight of the law.
