Pakistan Military Chief to NAF: Nigeria’s Influence Extends Beyond Africa

The Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, has hailed Nigeria as a regional powerhouse and a vital pillar of stability in Africa, underscoring the nation’s growing influence beyond the continent.

A statement by Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information Headquarters, Nigerian Air Force, in Abuja today.

General Mirza made the assertion during a courtesy visit to the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, at the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Headquarters in Abuja on April 10.

He described Nigeria as “a force to be reckoned with,” commending the professionalism, strength, and resilience of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

“Nigeria is a regional power – a force to be reckoned with. It plays a critical role not only in Africa but also in promoting global peace and stability,” said the Pakistani military chief.

He further noted the high regard in which Pakistan holds Nigeria’s military, emphasizing the importance of shared values and mutual respect between both nations.

The high-level meeting reinforced the longstanding defence cooperation between Nigeria and Pakistan, particularly in areas of counter-terrorism, peacekeeping, and military capacity-building.

General Mirza also showcased Pakistan’s advanced defence production capabilities, including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), combat aircraft, and anti-aircraft systems.

As part of efforts to deepen collaboration, he formally invited Air Marshal Abubakar to visit Pakistan for continued strategic dialogue.

In his remarks, Air Marshal Abubakar welcomed the Pakistani delegation and acknowledged Pakistan’s significant support to the development of Nigeria’s air power.

“The Nigerian Air Force has benefited tremendously from our defence partnership with Pakistan – particularly in pilot training, aircraft acquisition, and logistics support,” the CAS said.

Air Marshal Abubakar highlighted several opportunities for expanded collaboration, especially in research and development, aircraft technology, and advanced training programs. He reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening self-reliance through innovation and international partnerships.

Discussions also touched on ongoing engagements regarding the JF-17 Thunder and Super Mushshak aircraft platforms, which are central to Nigeria’s air force modernization efforts.

Both leaders expressed optimism for a future defined by stronger strategic cooperation, technological exchange, and shared commitments to regional and global security.
