NITDA Inaugurates Technical Working Group to Advance National Cloud Sovereignty Initiative

Nigeria has taken a significant stride in enhancing its digital infrastructure and data sovereignty with the inauguration of a Technical Working Group (TWG) for its National Sovereign Cloud Initiative (NSCI), led by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).

This initiative forms part of Nigeria’s broader strategy to localize cloud services, protect national data, and establish the country as a regional hub for cloud infrastructure in West Africa. Modeled after global best practices, the NSCI aims to promote domestic cloud adoption, strengthen cybersecurity measures, and elevate Nigeria’s status in the rapidly growing digital economy.

In a strong demonstration of industry collaboration, representatives from Nigeria’s cloud ecosystem—including local data center operators, global hyperscalers, and cloud service providers—gathered to elect the TWG’s leadership. This consensus among public and private sector stakeholders reflects a unified vision for advancing Nigeria’s cloud capabilities.

During the inauguration, NITDA Director-General Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in propelling Nigeria’s digital economy. He highlighted the TWG’s ecosystem-oriented structure, which merges inclusivity with technical expertise, thereby reinforcing Nigeria’s ambition to become a trusted continental leader in data sovereignty, cloud innovation, and scalable digital services.

The Tech Digest reports that the TWG is tasked with developing a regulatory framework for cloud governance and outlining a roadmap for Nigeria’s leadership in the regional digital economy. The NSCI is positioned to serve as a guiding blueprint for establishing reliable cloud infrastructure across Africa, bolstering Nigeria’s aspiration to be a digital sovereign power on the continent.

Oluwasayo Oshadami, Director and Solutions Architect at Equinix West Africa, was elected to chair the Technical and Infrastructure Subcommittee, with Dewole Ajao of Google serving as Deputy Chair. The Policy and Regulatory Subcommittee will be led by Ikechukwu Ibeawuchi, Government Affairs Leader at Cisco, and Morayo Adebayo-Adisa, Public Policy Director for West Africa at Mastercard.

The broader TWG will be co-chaired by Ike Nnamani, CEO of Digital Realty Nigeria, and Nonye Ujam, Government Affairs Lead at Microsoft, with NITDA acting as the secretariat to provide coordination and oversight.
