Nigeria, EU Strengthen Defence, Security Cooperation

Nigeria, EU Strengthen Defence, Security Cooperation

The Nigerian Ministry of Defence has announced plans to deepen its defence and security collaboration with the European Union (EU).

The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, made the disclosure during a meeting with EU officials at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.

 

According to a statement released by the Sani Datti for the Director, Information and Public Relations today.

Abubakar emphasized the need for stronger cooperation between Nigeria and the EU to combat terrorism and banditry.

The Minister called for a deliberate effort to explore more areas of collaboration on defence and security matters.

The meeting, which was attended by Mr. Casmin Dirban, Director of Peace Partnership and Crisis Management Department of the European External Action Service, and Ambassador Gautier Mignot, EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, discussed ways to improve cooperation on security issues.

 

The EU officials noted the existing bilateral cooperation between Nigeria and the EU and expressed a desire for stronger relations.

 The meeting is seen as a step towards strengthening Nigeria’s defence and security capabilities.

The development comes as Nigeria continues to face security challenges, including banditry, Boko Haram insurgency, and oil vandalism.

The strengthened partnership with the EU is expected to enhance Nigeria’s capacity to address these challenges and promote regional stability.
