Army Expresses Concern as Only 200 Youth Register for Recruitment in South-East

The Nigerian Army has raised alarm over the extremely low turnout of applicants from the South-East in its ongoing nationwide recruitment drive, with only 200 youths registered so far from the entire region.

Brigadier-General Chima Ekeator, who leads the Army Force Headquarters Recruitment Sensitisation Team in Anambra State, disclosed the figure during an engagement session with youth leaders and community president-generals.

In comparison, some states have recorded over 4,000 applicants, sparking concern that the South-East may fall short of its recruitment quota—potentially affecting the region’s future representation within the military ranks.

“This sensitisation is essential because we want equitable representation across all regions in the Nigerian Army. Community leaders must encourage youths to take part in this opportunity,” Ekeator said.

He emphasized that active participation from the South-East would not only secure fair representation in the force but also help address the region’s youth unemployment and underrepresentation in national security structures.

Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra, represented by the Commissioner for Youth Development, Patrick Aghamba, pledged the state’s commitment to driving awareness. He called on traditional rulers and community leaders to mobilize at least 10 eligible youths each to join the recruitment.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Tony-Collins Nwabunwanne, reiterated that the exercise targets young Nigerians aged 18 to 22, and urged them to seize the chance to serve the country while building meaningful careers in the military.

The outreach is part of a broader push to enhance youth engagement, strengthen national unity, and ensure balanced regional participation in Nigeria’s defense architecture.
