ISWAP Targets Strategic Infrastructure in Renewed IED Attack on Borno Bridge
A critical bridge connecting Mandafuma village to Biu town in Borno State has been destroyed following an improvised explosive device (IED) attack allegedly carried out by fighters of the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP), PRNigeria reports.
The attack, which occurred around 2 a.m. on Tuesday, was reportedly aimed at halting military reinforcements and cutting off civilian movement along the Biu-Damboa road. The incident has raised fresh concerns over the vulnerability of strategic infrastructure to terrorist threats in Nigeria’s northeast.
According to Zagazola, the explosion severely damaged the Mandafuma bridge, rendering it impassable for both security forces and local commuters.

Photos released from the scene show the extent of the destruction, as the bridge—once a key transit point for communities and commercial activities—now lies in ruins, further isolating the area.
This latest assault is part of a disturbing pattern. Just days earlier, on April 12, an IED blast on the Maiduguri-Damboa road killed eight travelers and injured 11 others. On March 21, a similar attack in Biu Local Government Area claimed four lives when a commercial vehicle hit an IED at Sabon Garin, Kimba junction.
These repeated attacks underline the continued threat posed by ISWAP, not just to security forces, but to innocent civilians and the socio-economic lifelines of the region. The destruction of infrastructure like bridges not only disrupts military logistics but also deepens the humanitarian crisis by restricting access to essential services and markets.
