Hope Behind Bars as 62 Inmates Graduate from Formal Education in Kano Correctional Centre

In a significant step towards inmate rehabilitation, 62 inmates at custodial centres in Kano State have graduated from the Nigerian Correctional Service’s (NCoS) continuing education programme.

The graduates successfully sat for the National Examination Council (NECO) and the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS) exams as part of the initiative aimed at transforming the lives of incarcerated individuals through formal education.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony on Thursday in Kano, the State Controller of Corrections, Ado Inuwa, said the programme aligns with the provisions of the NCoS Act 2019 and modern global correctional standards. He noted that the initiative is designed to empower inmates with knowledge and vocational skills, preparing them for reintegration as responsible citizens upon release.

“The focus is to rebrand and rehabilitate inmates so they can return to society better equipped to contribute positively,” Inuwa stated.

He praised the Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, for his unwavering commitment to improving inmate welfare and supporting educational and skills acquisition programmes across correctional facilities.

Inuwa also commended Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his administration’s backing, which has enabled inmates to access quality education and healthcare within custodial centres.

“This support has led to many inmates earning credit passes in core subjects such as English and Mathematics,” he added, urging the graduates to remain good ambassadors of the programme and embrace the reformation path.

In a goodwill message delivered on his behalf by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ibrahim-Faruk, Governor Yusuf reaffirmed his commitment to supporting correctional education. He expressed satisfaction with the progress recorded and reiterated the state’s resolve to contribute to the rehabilitation and transformation of inmates.

The event underscores the broader goal of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which seeks to enhance inmate welfare and promote restorative justice across Nigeria.
