Kirikiri Customs Boosts Revenue by 61%, Hands Over Expired Drugs to NAFDAC

The Kirikiri Lighter Terminal (KLT) Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced a remarkable 61% increase in revenue for the first quarter of 2025, while also strengthening its enforcement efforts with the handover of expired pharmaceutical products to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

Speaking during a media briefing on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Joy Edelduok, revealed that the Command generated ₦38.1 billion in Q1 2025—an impressive leap from the ₦23.6 billion collected in the same period last year. The ₦14.4 billion rise represents a 61% revenue growth.

“This significant increase is a reflection of our officers’ dedication, improved compliance by stakeholders, and the implementation of effective revenue-collection strategies,” Edelduok said.

She emphasized that the Command remains committed to transparency and stakeholder engagement through an open-door policy that promotes compliance and mutual cooperation.

In addition to the revenue milestone, the Command recorded a major enforcement success with the interception of nine 40-foot containers filled with expired and abandoned pharmaceutical products. The items, which were found to be controlled and prescription-only drugs, were formally handed over to NAFDAC for further regulatory action.

“These are abandoned containers of expired drugs, and we conducted a 100 percent physical examination to confirm their status. In accordance with the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023, we are officially handing them over to NAFDAC for appropriate disposal,” Edelduok stated.

Receiving the consignment on behalf of the NAFDAC Director, Port Inspection Directorate, Oluwaseun Ogunjimi lauded the efforts of the Customs Service in preventing the circulation of harmful and substandard medications.

“Most of these drugs require prescriptions and cannot be used casually. Now that they have been handed over to us, our enforcement team will take further action to ensure they are properly disposed of in line with regulatory standards,” Ogunjimi affirmed.

The twin achievements underscore the KLT Command’s dual focus on revenue generation and safeguarding public health through strategic enforcement of import regulations.
