FEPSAN Assures Farmers of Quality Fertilizers Ahead of Planting Season

As preparations intensify for the 2025 farming season, the Fertilizer Producers and Suppliers Association of Nigeria (FEPSAN) has assured Nigerian farmers of timely access to high-quality and affordable fertilizers.

This assurance was given during a press conference held in Abuja on Thursday, where the association presented its strategic outlook and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting national food production goals.

Speaking at the event, FEPSAN President, Mr. Sadiq Kassim, emphasized the association’s dedication to ensuring that farmers receive the “right quality and right value” of fertilizers to boost productivity.

He added that this initiative also aligns with the country’s broader food security agenda under the Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration.

“The fertilizer industry, in partnership with key government agencies, is ready to meet the demands of the 2025 season. Timely access to the right blend of fertilizers is key to empowering farmers and meeting national food security targets,” Kassim said.

He noted that the Presidential Fertilizer Initiative (PFI), through PFI-NKEF Ltd, is actively addressing current supply chain challenges.

This includes arrangements for the distribution of over 345,000 tons of fertilizer products—comprising 100,000 tons of DAP and 135,000 tons of Granular Ammonium Sulphate—expected to commence by the end of April and arrive by May.

Reflecting on challenges from the 2023 season, Kassim revealed that shortages of raw materials had limited the availability of key fertilizers, including 80,000 tons of DAP, 60,000 tons of NPK, and 1.1 million tons of Urea.

However, measures are now being put in place to prevent similar disruptions this year.

In line with efforts to ensure value for money, FEPSAN is collaborating with research institutions to develop cost-effective, soil-specific fertilizer blends tailored to the nutrient needs of various regions.

This, Kassim explained, would guarantee optimal agricultural outcomes for farmers.

He further stressed that fertilizers produced under the association are fully compliant with the Fertilizer Quality Control Act 2019, under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and relevant allied agencies—ensuring both quality and safety.

Touching on sustainability, Kassim highlighted the industry’s growing role in promoting soil health and climate-resilient farming practices through collaboration with government bodies and increased farmer awareness.

The FEPSAN President also called on President Tinubu to continue supporting the fertilizer sector by empowering relevant ministries and regulatory agencies to consolidate the gains of the PFI.

“We are fostering a system where collaboration between farmers, regulators, and industry stakeholders will drive sustainable growth in the agricultural sector,” he said.
