BUK Appoints Veteran Journalist Lamara Garba as Director of Public Affairs

Bayero University, Kano (BUK), has announced the appointment of seasoned journalist and communications expert, Lamara Garba, as the substantive Director of its Public Affairs Directorate.

The confirmation of his appointment was conveyed in an official letter signed by the University Registrar, Malam Haruna Aliyu, on April 22, 2025, following the approval of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas.

Born in December 1966 in Azare, Katagum Local Government Area of Bauchi State, Garba began his journalism career in 1993 with the New Nigerian Newspapers, covering major developments across northern Nigeria. He rose through the ranks to become a two-term Chairman of the Kano State Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and later held national roles, including Head of Strategic Communication at the Fiscal Responsibility Commission in the Presidency, Abuja, and Head of the Information Division at the National Examinations Council (NECO), Minna.

He joined Bayero University in 2015 and has since contributed immensely to institutional communication strategies, public engagement, and the promotion of the university’s initiatives and image.

An alumnus of BUK, Garba holds both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Mass Communication from the institution and is currently pursuing a PhD in the same field.

He is an active member of several professional bodies including the NUJ, Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), African Public Relations Association (APRA), Association of Communication Scholars and Practitioners of Nigeria (ACSPN), and the African Council for Communication Education (ACCE).

His appointment is expected to further strengthen BUK’s public relations and communications structure, enhancing the university’s visibility and stakeholder engagement.
