Pope Francis Laid to Rest at Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome
Pope Francis was laid to rest on Saturday afternoon at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, his favorite church in Rome, following a solemn funeral service held earlier at St. Peter’s Square, the Holy See announced.
The two-hour funeral attracted an estimated 250,000 mourners who filled St. Peter’s Square and the surrounding streets, according to reports. Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi later confirmed that about 400,000 people had gathered in total across Rome for the occasion.

Following the service, Pope Francis’ coffin was transported in an old popemobile through central Rome, passing iconic landmarks such as the Roman Forum and the Colosseum. Thousands lined the streets to bid a final farewell, with Vatican estimates putting the number at around 150,000.
World leaders and dignitaries, including U.S. President Donald Trump, Prince William, and UK Labour Leader Keir Starmer, were among those who attended the funeral service at St. Peter’s Square.
The 88-year-old pontiff passed away on Easter Monday, leaving behind a legacy marked by humility, compassion, and a deep commitment to the marginalized.
