Supreme Shariah Council Appoints Sheikh Bashir Umar as New President
The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN) has named its Vice President, Sheikh Dr. Bashir Aliyu Umar, as its new President following the passing of Sheikh Abdul Rasheed Hadiyatullah.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by the SCSN Secretary General, Malam Nafiu Baba Ahmed, who described the late Sheikh Hadiyatullah’s death as a profound loss to the Council and the broader Muslim Ummah in Nigeria and beyond.
Dr. Bashir’s appointment, according to the statement, was made in line with the Council’s constitution and established succession procedures.

“Sheikh Dr. Bashir Aliyu Umar, OON, has been unanimously confirmed as the new President of the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria,” the statement read. “We express our full confidence in his leadership, deep scholarship, and dedication to the principles of Shari’ah and justice. The appointment of a new Vice President will be announced in due course, In Shaa Allah.”
The Council also called on the Muslim community for prayers and support as it continues its mission of promoting Islamic values and justice across the country.
Dr. Bashir is widely regarded as a leading authority in Islamic studies and finance. He holds a Ph.D. in Hadith and Islamic Studies from the Islamic University of Madinah and has served on several national and international Shari’ah advisory bodies, including the Stanbic IBTC Bank’s Shari’ah Advisory Committee and the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Council of Experts on Islamic Banking.
