NCoS Refutes Prison Inmate’s Claims on Homosexuality in Kano

The Kano State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has debunked allegations made by a recently released inmate, Shehu Adamu.

In a strongly worded statement, the Command described Adamu’s account as “false, misleading, and a deliberate attempt to tarnish the image of the Service.”

The statement, signed by Chief Superintendent of Corrections, Musbahu Lawan K/Nasarawa, clarified several discrepancies in the former inmate’s claims.

Contrary to Adamu’s assertion that he was detained for nine years without trial, the Command stated that official records show he was remanded for only four months on charges of conspiracy and criminal breach of trust before being released. Furthermore, the Service noted that Adamu was never held at the Goron Dutse Custodial Centre, as claimed in the publication, but rather at the Kurmawa Custodial Centre.

Responding to allegations of widespread sodomy, rape, and deaths due to starvation within the facilities, the Command dismissed them as “malicious and unfounded.” It reaffirmed its commitment to upholding inmates’ rights and dignity in line with the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019 and international best practices.

The statement also emphasized that no inmate in any Kano correctional facility has been awaiting trial for more than two years, attributing this to the effective collaboration between the Command, the judiciary, and other justice sector stakeholders.

While urging the public to disregard Adamu’s claims, the Command called on media organizations to verify information with relevant authorities before publication, warning against sensationalism that could erode public confidence in the justice system.

The NCoS reiterated its dedication to reforming and rehabilitating offenders for reintegration into society and called for continued public support in its efforts.
