Oyo Moves to Tackle Illegal Mining, Launches Joint Task Force
The Oyo State Government has inaugurated a Joint Task Force aimed at combating illegal mining activities and enforcing compliance with Executive Order 001/2023.
The task force was officially launched on Monday at two separate events held in Babaaro, Igbeti (Olorunsogo Local Government Area), and Iseyin City Hall (Iseyin Local Government Area).
According to the state government, the initiative marks a decisive move to address unauthorized mining operations, protect natural resources, and safeguard host communities from potential security threats.
Speaking at the event, the Director-General of the Oyo State Mineral Development Agency (OYSMIDA), Abiodun Oni, warned that the era of tolerating illegal mining in the state is over.
“The task force has come to stay,” Oni declared. “Anyone found engaging in illegal mining will be arrested and prosecuted. The law will take its full course.”
He urged residents to support the initiative by reporting suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities, adding, “If you see something, say something. We must all work together to eliminate this menace.”
