Adopt AI to Deepen Good Governance – CG Adeniyi Charges Journalists
The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, has called on Nigerian journalists to embrace the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a means of strengthening public governance and enhancing media performance in the digital age.
Adeniyi made the call in Lagos on Monday while delivering the 7th Convocation Lecture of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ), themed “Artificial Intelligence in Public Governance.”
Highlighting the transformative potential of AI, he urged media professionals—especially emerging journalists—to harness its capabilities for investigative reporting, fact-checking, and public accountability.

“Previously, journalists relied on multiple manual sources to gather information. Today, AI simplifies and accelerates the process,” he said. “Rather than dwell solely on the risks, I believe young journalists must explore how AI can empower them to ask critical questions and contribute to better governance outcomes.”
The Customs boss also underscored the role of AI in combating the spread of fake news, urging practitioners to pursue informed public discourse through research-backed reporting.
On security and national development, Adeniyi advocated for the integration of AI education into the training curricula of all security agencies. He emphasized the need for continuous refresher courses to ensure personnel remain up-to-date with global technological advancements.
“To bridge the gap, we must revisit the basic curriculum for recruits in security institutions. For existing personnel, regular training is essential to keep pace with developments in the AI space,” he added.
Adeniyi’s remarks resonated with the audience of media scholars, students, and practitioners, as the conversation around AI’s role in journalism and governance continues to gain traction globally.
