Why We Arrested VeryDarkMan – EFCC Breaks Silence
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has finally addressed the controversy surrounding the continued detention of social media activist Martins Innocent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).
This statement comes less than 48 hours after protests erupted at the EFCC headquarters and Guaranty Trust Bank offices in Abuja, with demonstrators demanding his release.
VDM was arrested last week and has remained in custody since. His detention has drawn criticism from prominent political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Peter Obi.
Responding to public outcry, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale clarified that Otse was arrested after repeatedly ignoring formal invitations to respond to multiple petitions alleging financial misconduct.

“The EFCC invited Martins Innocent Otse based on several petitions bordering on serious allegations of financial crimes. Despite being served through his known addresses and communication channels, he failed to honour the invitations,” Oyewale said.
He emphasized that the activist’s arrest was not linked to his outspoken criticism of the commission’s operations, which he described as “unguided attacks.”
“While such conduct is condemnable, it was not the basis for his arrest. The EFCC acted within its legal mandate, and a valid Remand Order was obtained,” Oyewale noted.
He added that Otse has been granted administrative bail and is currently working to meet the conditions for his release. Once investigations are concluded, formal charges will be filed.
“The Commission values the interest of Nigerians in its activities, but we urge the public not to misinterpret our motives. The EFCC must be allowed to carry out its responsibilities without bias or external pressure,” Oyewale stated.
