Governors’ Wives Seek Urgent Action Against Drug Abuse, Commend NDLEA’s Achievements

The Nigeria Governors’ Spouses’ Forum (NGSF) has declared that the success of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency’s (NDLEA) ongoing fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking is pivotal to the realization of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

This assertion formed part of the resolutions at the end of a high-level training workshop organized by the NDLEA in collaboration with the NGSF, held on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, in Abuja. The communique was read by the First Lady of Ogun State, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun, on behalf of the Chairperson of the Forum and First Lady of Kwara State, Prof. (Mrs.) Olufolake Abdulrasaq.

The Director of Media and Advocacy Femi Babafemi, disclosed this information in a press statement signed and issued to newsmen today in Abuja.

According to him, the Forum emphasized that overcoming the drug scourge is essential to achieving holistic national development and building a Nigeria that meets the aspirations of its citizens.

“The successful tackling of the drug scourge will ensure the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President is achievable,” the governors’ wives stated. They also expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s worsening drug use crisis, warning that it threatens the wellbeing, security, and stability of individuals, families, and communities across the nation.

Acknowledging the NDLEA’s remarkable efforts under the leadership of Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), the Forum commended the agency’s strides in arrests, prosecutions, prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation efforts—describing them as phenomenal both nationally and globally.

The Forum resolved to engage with their respective State Governors to fast-track the establishment of State Drug Control Committees (SDCCs) in all 36 states. Currently, only nine such committees are operational. They also called for the formation of Local Government Drug Abuse Committees to deepen community-level interventions, especially in vulnerable rural areas.

In light of the growing crisis, the NGSF urged both the Federal and State Governments to declare a state of emergency on drug abuse and illicit trafficking. They emphasized the importance of national ownership of the problem and the mobilization of resources to combat it effectively.

The Forum also reiterated its commitment to advancing the Drug Abuse Prevention Treatment and Care (DPTC) programmes across states, with the First Ladies serving as project leads. They stressed the importance of community-driven, health-centered approaches that address the root causes of drug abuse, reduce stigma, and foster resilience.

Furthermore, the Forum called for increased collaboration with NDLEA state commands, civil society, and private sector stakeholders to implement sustainable, people-focused drug prevention and treatment initiatives.
