FG Vows Completion of Abuja-Keffi Road Expansion by June 2026

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the timely delivery of the Abuja (Mararaba)-Keffi road expansion project, promising its completion by June 2026.

This assurance followed an inspection visit to the project site on Saturday, by the Minister of State for Works, Bello Muhammad Goronyo, alongside the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Engr. Olufunsho Adebiyi, and other senior officials.

The project, which covers Section I of the Abuja-Keffi-Akwanga-Lafia-Makurdi Dual Carriageway, spans 43.65 kilometres on one side and 87.3 kilometres in total for both carriageways.

It forms a crucial segment of the broader Abuja–Lafia–Makurdi–Enugu–Port Harcourt transport corridor.

Speaking to journalists after the inspection, Goronyo expressed satisfaction with the progress of work, which has reached 42% completion.

He assured that the road would be delivered on schedule, adding that the Tinubu-led administration remains committed to infrastructure development that boosts the national economy and improves citizens’ lives.

“Our goal is to ensure that the full stretch from Abuja to Port Harcourt is completed by June 2026. We appreciate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for prioritising this life-changing infrastructure that will stimulate trade and economic activities across several states,” the Minister said.

He also dismissed concerns about funding delays, noting that the project enjoys a special funding arrangement. “Once certified payment claims are submitted, the Ministry is ready to process and disburse funds without delay,” he assured.

Earlier, the Federal Controller of Works for the FCT, Engr. Yakubu Usman, provided a technical briefing. He said the road is designed as a six-lane dual carriageway with outer shoulders and improved safety features.

He noted that stone base and binder courses are 80% complete, while work on median drains and rigid shoulders is ongoing.

Usman also acknowledged the challenge of executing the project through densely populated and high-traffic zones. To minimise disruption, he said the contractor now works at night in critical sections and collaborates with the Federal Road Safety Corps and other agencies to manage traffic flow.

The Project Manager of China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), Mr. Ronald Liao, expressed confidence in the June 2026 deadline, stating that the company is receiving full support from the Ministry and other stakeholders.
