Military, NSCDC Uncover Illegal Refinery in Anambra, Arrest Suspect
Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), in a joint operation with the Nigerian Navy and Army, have uncovered an illegal refinery and petrol station at Y-Junction, Nkwelle Ezunaka, in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The operation, which followed credible intelligence reports, was confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday by SC Edwin Okadigbo, spokesperson for the NSCDC Anambra Command.
NSCDC State Commandant, Mr. Olatunde Maku, said the joint team raided the site at approximately 1:35 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, and arrested one suspect, while others fled the scene.
During the raid, security personnel recovered 49 kegs of 25 litres each, suspected to contain adulterated automotive gas oil (diesel), and four 200-litre drums allegedly filled with adulterated premium motor spirit (petrol). A pumping machine used in the illegal operation was also seized.

Mr. Maku emphasized the agency’s resolve to clamp down on illegal petroleum activities and commended the Navy and Army for their collaborative support. The arrested suspect has been taken into custody for further investigation and prosecution.
He further warned operators of illegal refineries and impostors posing as petroleum officials to steer clear of the state, vowing that anyone caught would face the full wrath of the law.
“We are monitoring individuals and groups engaged in illegal oil dealings, whether under fraudulent disguises or through open criminality,” he said. “Our resolve is firm, and enforcement actions will be intensified across Anambra.”
The commandant reiterated NSCDC’s commitment to working with other security agencies to uphold national security and protect the state’s oil and gas assets from economic saboteurs.
He assured that investigations would continue to track down accomplices still at large and bring them to justice.
