Stay Alert, Your Enemies Aren’t Sleeping — CDS Charges Troops in Northwest
The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has urged troops deployed under Operation FASAN YAMA and others serving in Nigeria’s Northwest to remain vigilant and intensify civil-military cooperation in their fight against insecurity.
Speaking through Rear Admiral Olusanya Abiodun Bankole during a Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) strategic visit to the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army at Giginya Barracks in Sokoto, General Musa commended the troops for their bravery and dedication. However, he warned against complacency in the ongoing counterinsurgency efforts.
“The battle you are fighting is far from over. Don’t sleep, because your enemies are not sleeping,” Bankole said, relaying the CDS’s message to the soldiers.
He highlighted the impressive performance of the Division, particularly under Operation FASAN YAMA, and praised its consistency in operational reporting to Defence Headquarters.
“The CDS has asked me to personally commend your GOC and every officer involved in Operation FASAN YAMA for your remarkable efforts,” he added.
Bankole stressed the importance of unity among security agencies and the need to maintain trust with host communities. He emphasized that success against insurgents and bandits depends not only on firepower but also on strong civilian support.

“Let the people run to you, not from you. The best intelligence comes from the civilians you protect,” he advised.
Responding, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division, Major General Ibikunle Ajose, expressed appreciation for the recognition. He reaffirmed the Division’s commitment to a people-focused strategy in addressing security threats.
“The Chief of Defence Staff’s leadership philosophy teaches us that lasting success in asymmetric warfare lies not only in tactical superiority but also in winning hearts and minds,” Ajose said.
The visit also featured a sensitization session on human rights, military ethics, and gender-based violence, aimed at strengthening professionalism and discipline within the ranks.
Reinforcing the moral responsibility of the military, Ajose stated, “As protectors of the vulnerable, we must uphold empathy, discipline, and justice. Today’s engagement deepens our collective commitment to these values.”
Rear Admiral Bankole closed the visit with heartfelt remarks, paying tribute to the families of servicemen and women.
“You were not dropped from the sky. You have families—children, siblings—and we pray that all of you return home safely, not in coffins,” he said. “Nigeria will remain united. The bandits will not win. And our Armed Forces will not sleep.”
The event also outlined plans for medical outreach programs, sporting activities, and media engagements aimed at strengthening the bond between troops and host communities.
