FG To Collaborate With NASS, Media, Others On Cybercrime Act Review, Says Minister

The Federal Government has expressed its willingness to work closely with the National Assembly, the media, and other key stakeholders to ensure a thorough and inclusive review of the Cybercrime Act.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made this known on Tuesday in Abuja during a media briefing following a meeting with the United States Deputy Chief of Mission to Nigeria, Mr. Richard Mills.

Idris emphasized that the ongoing review aims to produce a law that reflects a broad consensus and enjoys the support of all parties involved.

“We will actively contribute to the review of the Cybercrime Act by partnering with the National Assembly, the media, and other stakeholders to ensure we arrive at an Act that is acceptable to all and fit for purpose,” the minister stated.

He reiterated the Tinubu administration’s strong commitment to press freedom and freedom of expression, describing them as essential pillars of democracy.

“No democratic system can thrive without a free and vibrant press. The media is a critical partner in governance, and we will continue to uphold its independence,” Idris said.

While assuring continued support for media freedoms, the Minister also called on journalists to exercise these freedoms with responsibility and patriotism.

“We encourage members of the media to uphold responsible journalism. While they have the freedom to operate, they must ensure their reports are guided by accuracy, fairness, and a deep sense of national interest,” he said.

Idris also highlighted the ministry’s plans to promote media and information literacy as part of efforts to combat misinformation, disinformation, and the spread of fake news.

In his remarks, Ambassador Mills described his discussion with the Minister as productive, particularly on matters related to press freedom and reforms to the Cybercrime Act.

“I had a very constructive conversation with the Minister about the importance of media freedom in Nigeria. I also welcomed his May 3rd statement on World Press Freedom Day, which reaffirmed the Nigerian government’s commitment to protecting press freedom,” Mills said.

He also encouraged the Ministry of Information to play an active role in the reform process of the Cybercrime Act currently under consideration at the National Assembly.

Tuesday’s meeting marks the second official engagement between the U.S. envoy and the Minister on issues concerning media freedom in Nigeria.
