Police Condemns Attack on IRT Operatives in Edo

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has strongly condemned an unprovoked attack on its operatives from the Force Intelligence Department’s Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT) in Okhuimwun Community, Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.

According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, May 20, when the operatives were transiting through Edo State from Lagos. A mob reportedly blocked the road near the University of Benin (UNIBEN) axis and violently assaulted the officers with stones, sticks, and other dangerous objects.

Two officers sustained serious injuries in the attack. However, the statement noted that the police personnel demonstrated remarkable restraint by not retaliating with force despite the life-threatening situation.

“The injured officers are currently receiving medical attention and are in stable condition,” Adejobi confirmed.

The police warned that such acts of lawlessness and aggression against law enforcement officers will not be tolerated and assured that investigations have been initiated to bring the perpetrators to justice.

In a separate development, the Inspector-General of Police has ordered a thorough investigation into a tragic incident in Oyo State, where a 14-year-old boy, Kehinde Alade, was allegedly killed during an altercation involving personnel of the Oyo State Police Command and officials of the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYTMA).

The IGP condemned the incident and revealed that the officer responsible for the shooting is already in custody. He emphasized that the investigation would be transparent, with findings made public to ensure justice for the victim.

“The Inspector-General expresses his heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased young man,” the statement read.

Reiterating its commitment to the protection of lives and property, the Nigeria Police urged the public to remain law-abiding and to seek redress through lawful and peaceful means.
