No Sharia Case Against Zainab, Matter Resolved Unless New Evidence Emerges – Northern CAN

Abuja, May 22, 2025 — The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), representing the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has lauded the Zamfara State Government for promptly debunking reports alleging that a young woman, Miss Zainab Muhamadu, was to be arraigned before a Sharia Court for converting to Christianity.

In a statement signed by the Chairman, Rev. Dr. Joseph John Hayab, and Secretary-General, Bishop Mohammed Naga, the association commended the government’s transparency and timely intervention, which helped avert potential tension and unrest.

“We acknowledge the public statement by the Zamfara State Government, which provided clear assurances that no such case currently exists before any court in the state,” the statement read. “This clarification, supported by the Grand Khadi, the Director-General of Hisbah, and various security agencies, was instrumental in preventing what could have escalated into a national crisis.”

The Northern CAN leadership urged that similar allegations in the future be treated with the same urgency, transparency, and accountability. They noted that based on current facts and official confirmation, there is no legal action against Miss Zainab, and the matter should be considered resolved unless credible new evidence emerges.

The Christian body also expressed appreciation to the Department of State Services (DSS), traditional rulers, youth leaders, religious figures, and security agencies in Zamfara for their “maturity and cooperation in maintaining peace and seeking the truth.”

CAN reiterated its call for increased vigilance and thorough investigations by security agencies into any report of religious rights violations across the country. “This is essential to prevent the spread of misinformation, protect citizens’ rights, and sustain national peace,” the statement added.

The association further advocated for stronger collaboration between Northern state governments and religious organizations, emphasizing that constructive engagement and mutual understanding would help prevent the spread of false narratives and promote social cohesion.

To Christians in the North and beyond, CAN urged calm, patience, and continued prayers, reassuring them of its unwavering commitment to defending religious freedom and fighting all forms of persecution.

“CAN will continue to stand for peace, justice, and the protection of the fundamental rights of all Nigerians to freely practice their faith,” the statement concluded.
