Police Clarify Abuja Estate Robbery, Blame Delay in Distress Call

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has confirmed a robbery incident at Efab Global Estate, Idu, Abuja, but dismissed reports alleging that five security guards were macheted and that police operatives arrived late at the scene.

In a statement on Friday, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said the narrative circulating online had exaggerated the scale of the attack. According to her, the actual incident involved a smaller group of armed men who breached the estate’s rear fence and tied up security guards, injuring one of them in the process.

“The FCT Police Command wishes to address and clarify a recent incident that has generated concern within the public domain, particularly regarding misleading reports suggesting that over 40 hoodlums invaded Efab Global Estate, Idu, injuring five security guards as Police delay response,” the statement read.

She explained that the Command received a distress call around 4:05 AM on May 21, and a tactical team led by the Area Commander, Life Camp, ACP Harrison Oruruo, was immediately deployed to the scene. However, the robbers had already escaped by the time officers arrived.

“During the incident, the assailants tied up two security personnel and inflicted injuries on one, who was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre for medical attention and is currently in stable condition,” Adeh said.

She confirmed that the attackers made away with valuables including laptops and mobile phones belonging to residents.

In the aftermath, police said they have heightened security patrols in the area and are working closely with local vigilantes and community stakeholders to prevent a recurrence.

Meanwhile, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ajao Adewale, has called on estate managers and residents to conduct proper background checks on their private security guards and domestic staff. He stressed the importance of collaboration between communities and their respective Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) to strengthen local security architecture.

“Residents and estate management committees are urged to always ensure proper vetting and profiling of private security personnel and domestic staff,” Adewale advised.

The police say investigations are ongoing to track and arrest those responsible for the robbery.
