DEPOWA Reaffirms Commitment to Boosting Children’s Welfare

The Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA) has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to promoting the welfare of children across Nigeria, as part of activities marking the 2025 Children’s Day celebration.

The event, held at the Aguyi Ironsi Sports Complex, Guards Brigade, in Abuja on Tuesday, served as a platform to showcase children’s creativity, talents, and dreams, while also reinforcing the association’s dedication to nurturing future leaders.

Speaking at the event, President of DEPOWA, Mrs. Oghogho Musa, described children as the greatest gifts to any nation.

“Today is not just another day on the calendar but a day to celebrate the greatest gift given to any nation — children. Every child represents a dream, a destiny, and a divine sparkle waiting to be nurtured,” she said.

Mrs. Musa emphasized DEPOWA’s enduring commitment to child development.

“At DEPOWA, we remain committed to the well-being of children. We do not just talk about them; we work for their future. We support the education of children of our service members, provide emotional and social support for widows and orphans, and build safe spaces where families can grow, even in the face of sacrifice,” she said.

She reminded children of their value, stating, “To our beautiful children, you are loved, you are smart, your dreams are valid, your voice matters, and you are not too young to lead, to create, or to make us proud. So, keep asking questions and remember — even superheroes need to do their homework.”

In her address to parents, Mrs. Musa urged them to raise children with empathy, discipline, and intentional guidance.

“To our dear parents, we carry a sacred duty. Let us raise children who are not only educated but empathetic. Let us guide them with discipline, yet with understanding and love. Remember, how we speak to them becomes their inner voice. They are watching us, so let us give them something beautiful to remember,” she advised.

The DEPOWA President also extended gratitude to Nigerian teachers and members of the Armed Forces for their roles in shaping young minds and safeguarding the nation.

“To every DEPOWA mother, every teacher shaping young minds, to every officer on duty keeping us safe so children can laugh freely — thank you,” she stated.

The event featured a colourful match past, poetic recitations, spoken word performances, and cultural displays — all designed to entertain, inspire, and give children a platform to express themselves and showcase their talents.
