Edo Police Arrest Officers for Vandalism After Attack on IRT Operatives
The Edo State Police Command has arrested several of its officers for allegedly vandalizing a vehicle following an attack on operatives of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) in Benin City. The arrested officers are members of the Command’s Quick Response Team.
The incident, which occurred on May 20, 2025, involved an attack by protesting youths on IRT personnel who were transiting through the Okhuimwun Community from Lagos.
PRNigeria reports that a Viral Video claimed that the incident occurred at Ekewan- Ubgowo road in the state .
According to Moses Yamu, the state police spokesperson, the IRT operatives sustained “various degrees of life-threatening injuries” and their vehicle was vandalized during the assault.

A reinforcement team was dispatched to the scene, successfully rescuing the injured officers and apprehending some of the individuals involved in the attack. However, a video later surfaced showing police officers “conducting themselves in an unprofessional manner, smashing a vehicle parked at the location.”
Yamu stated that while the Command condemns the attack on the IRT personnel, it views the conduct of the police officers during the rescue operation as “highly unprofessional.” He confirmed that the identified officers from the Quick Response Team have been arrested and are currently facing disciplinary procedures in line with police regulations.
Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, has called for mutual accountability from the public and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to providing policing services that adhere to best practices.
