MNJTF Commander Stresses Role of Education in Fighting Terrorism

The Force Commander of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), Major General Godwin Michael Mutkut, has emphasized the pivotal role of education in addressing insecurity in Nigeria’s North East, particularly in curbing youth recruitment by terrorist groups such as Boko Haram.

This is disclosed in a statement signed by MNJTF Spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba speaking during the commissioning of 270 classroom chairs donated by the African Union (AU) to Cross Kauwa Primary and Secondary School, the Force Commander—represented by Commander of 19 Brigade, Brigadier General Suleiman Ahmed—commended the AU for its generous support. He noted that education remains one of the most effective tools in countering radical ideologies and ensuring long-term peace.

“Improving access to quality education is vital to shaping a resilient society. It empowers young people with knowledge and opportunities, reducing their vulnerability to manipulation by extremist elements,” General Mutkut stated.

He also expressed appreciation to both the African Union and the European Union for their joint efforts in renovating a classroom block previously commissioned at the school and for the supply of the newly donated desks and chairs.

The Force Commander urged community members across Sector 3 to maintain their collaboration and support for MNJTF troops. “Together, we can achieve lasting peace in the North East,” he added.

Also speaking at the event, Dr. Idam Christiana, Team Leader of the AU Mission Support Team, affirmed that the donation was part of the AU’s ongoing support to the MNJTF under the framework of the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC). She explained that the initiative is aimed at reinforcing community resilience and fostering development through impactful educational interventions.

“Our partnership with local communities is central to building an environment that promotes peace, learning, and sustainable development,” she said.

The event underscores the importance of strategic non-kinetic efforts in counter-terrorism and highlights the role of international collaboration in promoting stability in the Lake Chad region.
