Security Forces Eliminate 3 Bandits, Arrest One as Worshippers Attacked in Zamfara Mosque

Security challenges continued to grip Zamfara State as a coordinated effort by local vigilantes and security forces neutralized three armed bandits and arrested one in Maru Local Government Area, while a separate attack claimed the life of a worshipper and injured two others during prayers in a mosque in Zurmi LGA, PRNigeria reports.

The successful ambush took place on Thursday, June 6, around 3:00 p.m. when four suspected bandits riding on two motorcycles were intercepted by members of the local vigilante group, known as Yansakai, in the forests between Yan Mangwarora, Mallamawa, and Kurar Mota villages in Dansadau District of Maru LGA.

According to intelligence sources, the vigilantes, working in collaboration with troops of Operation FANSAN YANMA, engaged the suspects in a fierce confrontation. Three of the bandits were killed in the exchange, while one was arrested alive. Two motorcycles used by the suspects were recovered.

Zagazola Makama reports that the arrested bandit was immediately handed over to police authorities, while the remains of the neutralized criminals were deposited at the General Hospital in Dansadau.

In a separate incident on Saturday evening, terror struck Dole Moriki village in Moriki District of Zurmi LGA when armed bandits invaded a mosque during Isha (night) prayers around 8:00 p.m., opening fire on worshippers.

“One person was confirmed dead at the scene, while two others sustained varying degrees of injuries as the bandits shot sporadically at worshippers during the prayer session,” a security source disclosed.

Security personnel were swiftly deployed to the area to repel the attackers and stabilize the situation. The injured victims were taken to the General Hospital in Moriki, where they are receiving medical attention. The body of the deceased was released to family members for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

The twin incidents underscore the persistent threat of banditry in the state, even as security forces intensify their operations to restore peace and protect vulnerable communities across Zamfara.
