How Nigeria’s Democratic Culture is Stabilizing West Africa – Tuggar By Umar Farouk Bala

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has described the country’s democratic culture as a stabilizing force in West Africa, positioning it as a model for regional peace and governance.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Alkasim Abdulkadir, Tuggar noted that despite the wave of political instability sweeping parts of West Africa, Nigeria has remained firmly committed to democratic values, marked by regular elections, peaceful transitions, and respect for constitutional processes.

“Nigeria stands as a beacon of hope and stability in the region,” he stated.

“Our democratic institutions may not be perfect, but they are resilient. At a time when democracy is being challenged across the sub-region, Nigeria continues to uphold the principles of rule of law, electoral credibility, and civic engagement.”

His comments come against the backdrop of the military coups in Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Niger, which have prompted interventions and concerns from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Tuggar emphasized that democracy must remain central to the bloc’s peacebuilding and conflict resolution framework.

“Nigeria’s commitment to democratic governance is not just a domestic matter—it is part of our contribution to regional peace and stability,” the Minister added.

Observers and political analysts agree that Nigeria’s democratic example carries significant weight in the region, given its population, economic size, and historical leadership role.

Many view the country’s political stability as essential to efforts at reversing anti-democratic trends in West Africa.

Tuggar also highlighted Nigeria’s legacy of defending democracy beyond its borders, referencing past peacekeeping missions in Liberia and Sierra Leone, as well as current leadership roles in ECOWAS dialogues aimed at restoring constitutional order in affected member states.

He further commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approach to political and economic reforms, stating that these efforts are laying the groundwork for a more prosperous and stable Nigeria.

“Our reforms may be tough, but they are necessary,” Tuggar said.

“In the end, we are building a nation whose progress will inspire and strengthen democracy across the continent.”
