Nigeria Condemns Israel’s Strike on Iran, Urges Immediate Ceasefire

As tensions between Israel and Iran spiral into open conflict, Nigeria has joined a growing chorus of international voices calling for restraint and immediate de-escalation.

In a statement on Saturday, the Federal Government of Nigeria condemned Israel’s preemptive strike on Iranian territory, describing it as a dangerous provocation that has triggered a fresh wave of missile and aerial attacks between the two longtime rivals.

“The Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria condemns Israel’s preemptive strike on Iran that has led to an escalation of hostilities,” said Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“Nigeria stands ready to support all genuine efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions and promoting peace in the region,” the statement noted.

“The continued cycle of retaliation not only endangers civilian lives but threatens to plunge the broader Middle East into further instability, with implications for international security and economic development,” the statement read.

Nigeria called on both sides to immediately halt hostilities and exercise maximum restraint in the interest of peace.

Stressing the need for dialogue over confrontation, the government reaffirmed its commitment to the principles of peaceful coexistence, non-aggression, and multilateral diplomacy.

“We urge the international community, particularly the United Nations Security Council, to intensify efforts toward immediate de-escalation and to provide a platform for constructive engagement,” the Ministry added.

The government further emphasized that military action is not a viable substitute for negotiation, insisting that lasting peace can only be achieved through diplomacy, mutual respect, and adherence to international law.

“Nigeria stands ready to support all genuine efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions and promoting peace in the region,” the statement read.

The recent flare-up between Iran and Israel has raised fresh concerns among the international community, amid fears that the conflict could expand and destabilize the already volatile Middle East.

The new round of violence has fueled widespread fears of a regional war that could engulf neighboring countries and destabilize the already fragile geopolitical balance of the Middle East — with potentially devastating consequences for global security and economic growth.
