Amnesty International Condemns “Horrifying” Benue Killings, Demands Urgent Action
Amnesty International has strongly condemned the recent massacre of over 100 people in Yelewata, Benue State, describing the incident as “horrifying” and a clear indication of the Nigerian authorities’ failing security measures in the region. The human rights organization is demanding an immediate end to the “almost daily bloodshed” and swift justice for the perpetrators.
According to Amnesty International, gunmen invaded Yelewata from late Friday, June 13, into the early hours of Saturday, June 14, 2025, unleashing a wave of violence that left scores dead. The group reported that many families were “locked up and burnt inside their bedrooms,” with numerous bodies “burnt beyond recognition.”

Amnesty International highlighted its ongoing documentation of an “alarming escalation of attacks across Benue state,” where gunmen have been operating with “utter impunity.” These attacks, the organization warned, are leading to massive displacement and pose a significant threat to food security, as the majority of victims are farmers.
The human rights body criticized the Nigerian authorities’ inability to curb the violence, stating it is “costing people’s lives and livelihoods.” Amnesty International emphasized the urgent need for action, warning that “without immediate action many more lives may be lost.”
The call to action from Amnesty International underscores the growing concern over the persistent insecurity in Benue State and the devastating impact on its residents.
