CDS General Musa Reaffirms Military’s Commitment to National Security, Calls for Strategic Media Collaboration

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has restated the unwavering commitment of the Nigerian Armed Forces to protecting the country’s sovereignty and restoring peace in troubled regions, emphasizing that both military operations and strategic media engagement are critical to national security.

Speaking at an expanded media parley in Abuja to mark his second year in office alongside other service chiefs, General Musa noted that the military’s efforts to tackle insecurity cut across kinetic and non-kinetic dimensions. He revealed that non-kinetic strategies—those that involve communication, community engagement, and civil-military relations—now account for more than 70 percent of efforts in modern asymmetric warfare.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain resolute in their mission to safeguard our territorial integrity and restore peace and order in collaboration with other security agencies,” the CDS said.

He underscored the growing importance of media as a central force in shaping public sentiment, managing national morale, and building societal resilience against extremist ideologies and misinformation.

“In today’s battles, particularly against terrorism and insurgency, we are not only engaged in physical combat but also fighting a war for the hearts and minds of the people,” General Musa said. “The media is not just a supporting actor but a central player in shaping narratives that influence national unity and peacebuilding.”

The Defence Chief appealed for a professional and patriotic media partnership, stressing that accurate and objective reporting can significantly impact the effectiveness of security operations.

“That is why we seek a professional, objective, and nation-oriented partnership with the media. Truth and trust are the cornerstones of national resilience,” he added.

General Musa explained that the media parley was convened to foster direct interaction between the military high command and media executives across the country, creating a channel for open dialogue and mutual understanding in the fight against insecurity.

Reaffirming the military’s commitment to transparency and accountability, he urged media professionals to support national efforts by combating disinformation and amplifying verified narratives that encourage public confidence and unity.

“The perception battle, which entails controlling the narrative and countering misinformation and disinformation, is essential to strategic success. Media professionals play a critical role in this non-kinetic theatre,” he stated.

General Musa assured Nigerians that the Armed Forces will continue to adopt a whole-of-society approach in addressing security threats and achieving lasting peace across the nation.
