Troops Repel Terrorist Ambush in Katsina, Eight Killed
The troops of Operation FASAN YAMA on Tuesday repelled a deadly ambush by terrorists along the Kurfi–Batsari Road in Katsina State, neutralizing eight insurgents and recovering a cache of weapons.
The early morning attack, which occurred around 5am on June 18, 2025, was met with a swift and coordinated response by troops of the 17 Brigade at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Kurfi, according to a statement released by the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) in Abuja.
“During the encounter, the troops swiftly engaged the terrorists, and after a prolonged duel, defeated them, thwarting the attack,” the statement said.
Following the confrontation, eight terrorists were confirmed killed in action, while troops recovered five AK-47 rifles, six magazines, and 13 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition at the scene of the clash.

Unfortunately, one soldier sustained injuries during the firefight and has since been evacuated to the 17 Brigade Medical Centre for medical attention.
DHQ confirmed that the soldier is responding to treatment and remains in stable condition.
The Defence Headquarters, in the statement signed by Major General Marcus Kangye, Director of Defence Media Operations, praised the gallantry and professionalism of the troops during the encounter.
He noted that “the situation remains calm, while troops’ morale and fighting efficiency remain high.”
General Kangye reiterated the military’s commitment to eradicating terrorism and ensuring the safety of citizens across Nigeria. He urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing timely information on suspicious movements or individuals.
The encounter is the latest in a series of successful operations by security forces in Nigeria’s northwest, where troops have been battling armed banditry, kidnappings, and insurgency.
