Tinubu’s Hands Over ECOWAS Leadership to Sierra Leone’s President
President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone has been elected the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African State (ECOWAS) Authority of Heads of State and Government, succeeding Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has completed his two-term tenure.
The leadership transition took place at the 67th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority held in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

Contrary to earlier reports speculating that Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye had been selected during a closed-door meeting preceding the session, President Bio officially emerged as the new chair at the plenary.
In his acceptance speech, President Bio outlined his leadership agenda, emphasizing four key priorities:
Restoring constitutional order and deepening democratic governance;
Strengthening regional security cooperation;
Advancing economic integration within West Africa; and
Enhancing institutional credibility across ECOWAS.
President Tinubu was initially elected as ECOWAS Chairman on July 9, 2023, during a summit in Guinea-Bissau. He was re-elected in July 2024 in Abuja, as regional leaders opted for continuity in addressing security challenges, fostering reconciliation, and promoting development across the region.
