Troops Eliminate Scores of Terrorists Moving from Zamfara to Niger in Midnight Battle

In a coordinated midnight operation, troops of the Nigerian Army, backed by the Nigerian Air Force, eliminated scores of terrorists attempting to move from Zamfara State into Niger State through the dense Kwanar Dutse Forest.

The operation, conducted in the early hours of June 24, 2025, successfully disrupted the terrorists’ planned infiltration into Bangi community in Mariga Local Government Area, averting what could have been a major attack on surrounding settlements

A statement by Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, today in Abuja, said the suspected terrorists were reportedly heading towards Kwatankoro Forest, either to establish a new base or to launch coordinated attacks on vulnerable communities in the region.

The Nigerian Army said troops swiftly mobilized and confronted the terrorists in a fierce midnight firefight that raged for over three hours. The intense ground combat forced the terrorists into disarray, prompting a retreat.

She said Air Force jets were subsequently deployed to carry out precision airstrikes on their escape routes, inflicting further damage on the fleeing insurgents.

“Though the number of terrorist casualties remains unconfirmed, multiple blood trails along their withdrawal paths suggest significant enemy losses,” military sources disclosed.

Despite the operational success, the Army confirmed that 17 gallant soldiers paid the supreme price during the confrontation, while 10 others sustained varying degrees of injuries. The wounded personnel have been evacuated to a military hospital and are reportedly in stable condition.

Reacting to the development, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Oluwafemi Oluyede, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the soldiers, describing them as heroes who died defending the sovereignty of Nigeria. He extended his heartfelt condolences to their families and directed immediate support and medical care for the injured troops.

“Our resolve to end terrorism and restore peace in every part of Nigeria remains unshaken. The Nigerian Army, working closely with the Navy, Air Force, and other security agencies, will continue to hunt down terrorists and criminal gangs across the country,” the Army Chief said.

He also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue supporting security forces with actionable information to help neutralize threats and protect communities.

The Nigerian Army reassured Nigerians of its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, stressing that the sacrifices of fallen heroes will not be in vain.
