Anambra Police Arrest Man for Masterminding Friend’s Abduction, Collection of N5.3m Ransom

Police operatives in Anambra State have arrested a 24-year-old man, Muanaenye Chekwube Victor, for allegedly masterminding the kidnapping of his own friend and collecting a ransom in foreign currency equivalent to ₦5.3 million.

According to a statement released by the Anambra State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspect was apprehended by officers attached to the Uli Divisional Headquarters on the evening of June 26, 2025, following investigations into a reported case of abduction.

The police investigation revealed that Victor, in collaboration with members of a criminal gang, devised a plot to lure his friend under the pretense of visiting another acquaintance. Upon arriving at the location, the unsuspecting victim was abducted.

In a cunning attempt to evade suspicion, Victor allegedly feigned his own kidnapping to make it appear as though he too was a victim. However, following intelligence efforts by the police, he was tracked and arrested.

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to orchestrating the entire scheme, and confirmed that his gang collected a ransom in U.S. dollars, equivalent to ₦5.3 million, before releasing the victim.

The Police Command noted that Victor is now cooperating with investigators and has been providing valuable information to assist in the arrest of his accomplices. He will face prosecution upon the conclusion of the ongoing investigation.

“The Command remains committed to improving safety and security in the state and will continue to go after criminal elements until Anambra becomes totally safe,” SP Ikenga assured.

The arrest underscores the importance of vigilance, especially in personal relationships, as well as the command’s resolve to crack down on organized crime in the state.
