Tinubu Hails Customs Boss Wale Adeniyi on Historic Election as WCO Chair

President Bola Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, on his historic election as Chairperson of the World Customs Organisation (WCO) Council.

Adeniyi was unanimously elected on Saturday in Brussels, becoming the first Nigerian to head the 73-year-old global customs body, which comprises 186 member nations. His election marks a significant milestone not just for the NCS but for Nigeria, as the country’s flag was raised for the first time at the WCO headquarters since the organisation’s establishment in 1952.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu commended Adeniyi’s performance since assuming office two years ago, praising his efforts in boosting revenue collection, exceeding fiscal targets, strengthening stakeholder relations, and modernising customs operations through digital innovation.

“I congratulate the Customs boss for bringing pride and validation to our country and the economic reforms. I urge the new Chairperson of the WCO to live up to the expectations of the Council and even surpass them,” the President stated.

President Tinubu also expressed gratitude to the Secretary-General and leadership of the WCO for supporting Adeniyi’s emergence, assuring them of Nigeria’s full backing as he assumes the top role.

Adeniyi will officially take over from Edward Kieswetter, the Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service, on July 1, 2025. As Chairperson, he will guide the policy direction of the WCO Council, which serves as the organisation’s highest governing body. The Council is responsible for setting global standards, promoting best practices, and ensuring operational uniformity among customs administrations worldwide.

Adeniyi’s elevation is seen as a reflection of Nigeria’s growing influence in international trade and customs affairs under the current administration.
